What are they?
Pain from shin splints is caused when the anterior (front) tibial muscle begins to tear away from the tibia or shin bone. The tibial muscle runs down the front inside of the shin from the bottom of the knee to the top of the foot. This is the muscle that holds up the arch of the foot. Hence, if there is too much downward pressure on the arch of the foot (eg. flat feet), that tibial muscle becomes stressed and expresses itself as shin splints.
What causes shin splints?
Shin splints are usually caused from overuse. Beginning athletes who engage in rigorous activities without allowing proper time for conditioning will commonly experience shin splints
People with biomechanical misalignments will also experience shin splints. For example, excessive pronation or supination of the foot will cause shin splints. When the arch of the foot gets flatter or over stressed from athletics or work, pain will result from the overworked tibialis muscle.
How do you treat it?
Alleviating this pain means alleviating the pressures at work. The foot, namely the arch, needs additional support to take the pressure off of the tibialis muscle. A custom orthotic provides the rigid support needed to support the arch of the foot and alleviate the pain of shin splints. A custom-fit orthotic is the best solution to a shin splint problem regardless of your lifestyle.
